RSV, flu numbers down in Manitoba

Although the number of RSV cases continues to be higher than the number of flu in the province, recent data shows that both viruses are on the decline.

For the week of January 15 to 21, there were 105 RSV detections, with a test positivity rate of 8.3 percent. That’s down from 8.7 percent the previous week, when there were 131 detections.

Influenza A remains low in Manitoba, with only 10 cases reported for the week for a positive test rate of 0.8 per cent, down from 18 cases and 1.9 per cent the previous week.

The province said the rate of positive flu tests is below the national average of 1.3 per cent.

Two people were admitted to hospital with the flu.

“Overall, flu activity this season began to increase earlier than expected and is now below expected levels for this time of year,” the province’s weekly report said.

Looking at the COVID numbers, there were 59 new cases, down from 122 the previous week.

The positivity rate was 11.3 percent, down a full percentage point from the previous week.

There were also seven hospitalized, according to the province.

“Effluent monitoring data from January shows sustained COVID-19 activity in Winnipeg and Brandon at lower levels,” the province said.
